Elise phoned Tom Hannaford’s number. She knew it by heart even though she very rarely called it. That’s what came of living on the courtyard so long: she’d memorized the landlord’s contact information.

Tom’s voicemail picked up after four rings, and there was a message saying he’d gone away for the weekend. He left a number for his go-to contractor in case of emergency, but that didn’t help Val and Elise. What they needed was a key.

When Elise hung up the phone, Val asked, “What? He didn’t pick up?”

“Won’t be back until Monday,” Elise confirmed.

“Well, what do we do until then?”

Navigating toward the back bedroom, Elise said, “I don’t know about you, but I need a nap.”

It was criminal how tired she’d been lately. The moment her head hit the pillow, she was out like a light.

When she awoke from her nap, she was startled to find Val dozing beside her bed in the borrowed wheelchair. Elise gasped, which woke up Val, and she gasped too. “What?”

“Were you watching me sleep?” Elise asked.

“What?”

“Why have you parked yourself beside my bed?”

“I don’t know,” Val said groggily. “I wanted to tell you something.”

“Tell me what?”

“I don’t remember.”

Elise turned to look at the clock on her bedside table. “What time is it? Goodness, dinnertime already. Have you eaten?”

“No,” Val said without moving. “I’ll make us something.”

“You’ve been doing all the cooking since my surgery. I’ll cook tonight.”

“We’ll do it together,” Val negotiated. “What do you feel like?”

“Stir-fry,” Elise said out of nowhere. “Do we have vegetables?”

“Yeah, but no chicken or anything.”

“That’s okay. I just feel like vegetables.”

Val shot Elise an odd look as she climbed out of the wheelchair. Sleep had obviously weakened her, because she tumbled back into it and groaned. “Wait a sec. I’m not totally awake yet.”

“Me neither,” Elise admitted, scooching toward the wall and then patting the mattress beside her. “Come one. Have a lie-down.”

Without argument, Val joined her on the bed. As they lay side-by-side, each staring up at the ceiling, the evening’s gorgeous orange sunset painted itself across the room. It was truly lovely, and Elise felt very fortunate to see it so clearly.

Grasping Val’s arm, Elise said, “I see! I can see!”

“See what?” Val asked with an air of mystery.

“The sunset! The room! You!”

“Oh,” Val chuckled. “I thought you meant you were having another psychic vision.”

“No, I mean I can see the world as it is. My right eye isn’t lost in a fog! The surgery was a success!”

Val threw an arm around her aunt and said, “I’m happy for you. I knew everything would work out okay.”

“I didn’t,” Elise admitted. “I thought it was all downhill from here.”

“I wonder if you’ll still have your psychic visions,” Val said.

A mournful feeling came over Elise as she considered losing an ability she’d only just gained. But she didn’t want to complicate matters or make Val feel bad for bringing up the topic, so she simply said, “Oh well. I never asked to have them in the first place.”
